AROMATHERAPY
At Therapy Designed for You, we like to introduce our clients to different self-care
techniques and to employ a wide variety of treatment techniques. The more varied
the tools, the more problems we can treat.
Aromatherapy has become a marketing buzz word in the last few years to sell
everything from room fresheners to dish detergent. The difference between the
commercial
household products and the types of products that should be used in a therapeutic
setting is the nature of the scent. Most air fresheners, cleansers, perfumes & lotions
that you buy receive their aroma from chemically manufactured scents. While these
are not bad, they are not considered a holistic source. Products used on the
skin, and specifically for an aromatherapeutic effect, should be as close to
natural as possible.
Essential oils provide a natural therapeutic method of aiding the body’s
ability to heal. Essential oils are derived from nature. Therapeutic grade essential
oils are derived using methods that preserve the natural composition of the oil.
Lower grade essential oils are derived using harsher methods, or may be derived
from less desirable parts of the plant. Think of essential oils as you would
olive oil—you get what you pay for. Cold-first pressed olive oil is the
best olive oil you can buy. It is substantively more expensive than other grades
because there is relatively little oil achieved in this first processing of the
olives. Harder pressing which crushes the skin, or heat extraction methods impacts
the quality of the olive oil. While the cold-first pressed is most expensive,
it has the purest taste and you may actually use a lot less. Same holds true
with essential oils.
Since the skin works as a conduit for essential oils to the skin, the benefits
of essential oils may be achieved through use during massage. Massage therapists
may also use airborne distribution of the essential oils. Either way, it makes
the experience rather pleasant!
